Description:
How should we think about security and defense in contemporary Canada? Three decades after the end of the Cold War, Russia's assault on Ukraine marks the return of major wars to the European continent. A challenge to international order, a new Cold War, a confrontation by proxy - there's no shortage of labels to characterize the conflict and its consequences. While Canada's support for Ukraine seems self-evident, the war nevertheless raises a number of questions. What sacrifices are Canadians prepared to make for Ukrainian victory? How do we balance military spending, alliances, environmental protection, defense of northern sovereignty, international trade, human rights, economic and political sanctions in a complex, interconnected world? In search of answers, this book offers food for thought in understanding the war in Ukraine and what it means for Canada and the world.
